A Vital Voice

A Vital Voice

Established five years ago, YABA provides a voice for the Asian Business community in Yorkshire.  Research has shown that the Asian business community make a significant contribution to UK plc.   Despite making up less than 10% per cent of the UK population, the Asian business sector contribute over 8% to the GDP (Guardian, 2015), and there is also evidence that the Asian community is up to four times more likely to be more entrepreneurial than their UK counterparts (ABC, 2016).

Over the years YABA has created powerful partnerships, increased traction and impact and has worked closely with its diverse membership to effectively represent them at all levels within government and the wider business community.  YABA is not only about business productivity; its most recent project is in partnership with education and looks to prepare young people for the fast-changing world of work.  YABA has engaged with local schools where members have given inspirational presentations, provided work-experience placements and careers talks.  The results have been inspiring and have prepared local young people for the world of work.

Against a backdrop of Brexit and the groundwork being set for the UK to become an independent global trading nation, members have sought support and guidance, along with resources and contacts to help make strategic business decisions.  In partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry the YABA team and experts from across their network have been working together on a range of initiatives and trade missions.  A Northern Powerhouse Tech Trade Mission to India is on the 16 – 23 February 2019.  This trade mission is ideal for innovative and future-tech companies.

YABA is also working on the Northern Asian Power-list (NAP) project. NAP profiles the top 100 Asian business and professional influencers across the North of England, showcasing Asian wealth and influence across the UKs Northern Powerhouse.  The list will highlight the changing patterns of Asian wealth, influence  and economic development, with fascinating commentary on the financial impact the British Asian community in the UK.  The first NAP board meeting will take place in Bradford on the 2nd May 2019.
