Tech Week: College students take inspiration during Bradford Tech Week

TWO local colleges are hoping Bradford Tech Week will inspire their students by offering a look at potential careers in the industry.

Both Bradford College and Keighley College are among local education providers supporting the first Tech Week for the city, which started on Monday.

Their students are involved in the online programme of events which are open to young people across the district, and includes three workshops.

Nick Scaife, head of department at Bradford College for work experience and industry placements, said: “We hope Bradford Tech Week inspires our students to discover the world of possibilities within technology. We believe that tech skills will continue to be crucial for all and we want to help our students find out how they can use their talents to be a part of the next generation of tech heroes.”

Keighley College principal, Steve Kelly, said: “There is tech behind everything, and this is a great opportunity for young people to meet and speak to employers, and to get an understanding about the importance of the tech, manufacturing, and digital industries.

“Tech Week will give students of all ages an opportunity to see what’s available, to widen their horizons, and to be motivated.

“At the college, we want to raise their aspirations by exposing them to as wide a range of opportunities as possible, while ensuring that we provide them with a high level of support to fulfil their potential.”

The events will help students to gain first-hand knowledge of the job roles and pathways that they can take into the world of tech.

Tech Week has been launched by Bradford Means Business, The Telegraph & Argus, LOCALiQ and tech experts Exa Networks. The initiative aims to help young people into careers in digital industries.

The programme will all be online this year, with three workshops in total taking place throughout the week. In addition there are hundreds of tech-related learning videos available on the Tech Week YouTube channel, including exploring AI learning with the University of Bradford; courses in tech at Keighley College, Science Festival STEM activities, and the PwC Employability Hub.

Tech Week aims to firmly place the idea of tech as a career into the minds of school and college students across the district and challenge them to think about how tech impacts on almost every type of business.

The team behind the initiative have been working closely with the University of Bradford, Bradford College, City Fibre, Exa Networks, Cloud2, Teledyne, BTL, Virtual College, and Emerald, to develop an interactive programme for students and give them a taste of life in the tech sector.
