A niche home care service that provides specialist support aimed at Asian people is marking 20 years of supporting people in their own homes.
Care Unique, based in Bradford, was established in 2006 by Nina Kaur, 52, after she identified a gap in care provision for Asian service users while working in Bradford Council’s home care department.
Ms Kaur, originally from Derby, spent five years at Bradford Council before launching the family-run service, which now supports more than 115 individuals and employs 80 staff.
She said: “I realised there was no home care services in the authority that could cater for the needs of Asian service users so I started Care Unique.”
Over the past two decades, Care Unique has supported more than 1,000 service users.
The business remains family-run, though new partners have joined in recent years to help expand into supported living.
Ms Kaur said: “20 years is a big achievement accomplishment as times have been hard.
“By winning tenders in different authorities Leeds and Calderdale and providing a good level of support whilst promoting independence we have continued up to 20 years.”
The company offers a wide range of care services, including personal care, medication support, meal preparation, shopping, and both day and night sitting.
They also escort individuals to day services.
Ms Kaur added: “We have cared for children with complex health needs who have now become adults.
“Their parents first language was not English and as our staff spoke the relevant language it’s helped them in the journey to care for their child.”
She said the ability to provide culturally sensitive care remains essential, especially as elderly people continue to live longer and require support.
Though anyone can access the services, the service is specifically aimed at Asian people.
She said: “We provide services to everyone not just solely Asian service users.
“We have clients who are Sikh, Muslims, Hindu, Gujrati, Bengali as well as English, African and Polish.”
Ms Kaur is content knowing that her service is offering “a high standard of care by talking appropriate languages and being able to cook the right foods.
“Ans most of all, the service users have happy with the service offered – the biggest reward is the blessings you gain after that.”

“As it’s not a culture for Asian families to send their child or elderly person into a care home this is why we have continued as a passion and helped people live as long as they can in their own homes whilst supporting friends and family members.”
The service has continued despite financial challenges and funding cuts.
