Apprentice of the Year goes to young woman…

Apprentice of the Year goes to young woman who defied the odds

After leaving school with limited guidance about the different career pathways available, Aisha Ayub faced a challenging start to her professional journey. Undeterred, she applied for hundreds of apprenticeship opportunities before eventually securing a role with Skipton Building Society – a breakthrough that would transform her career.

Today, alongside her apprenticeship, Aisha serves as an Apprenticeship Ambassador, visiting schools and colleges across Yorkshire to help young people understand the opportunities that apprenticeships can provide.

Reflecting on her journey, she said: “Not long ago, an apprenticeship felt out of reach. Now I’m able to stand in front of young people and show them what’s possible.

“Combining study with real workplace experience is what drew me to an apprenticeship. Being an apprentice at Skipton Building Society has allowed me to grow beyond measure, both personally and professionally. I’m fortunate to spend every day surrounded by incredible colleagues who have supported me throughout my journey, shared their knowledge and given me the opportunity to apply what I learn into real-life situations.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of her role has been inspiring the next generation. She added: “One of the greatest opportunities my apprenticeship has given me has been the chance to become an Apprenticeship Ambassador, visiting primary schools, secondary schools and colleges across Yorkshire to champion apprenticeships and share my own journey.

“Speaking to young people and showing them the opportunities available through apprenticeships has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. Being able to give the next generation the guidance and insight I would have valued when making decisions about my own future, while showing them what is possible, is something I am incredibly proud of.”

Aisha believes her award represents something much bigger than individual recognition. She stressed: “For me, this award represents more than my own achievement. It represents the thousands of ambitious young people across Bradford who have the talent, determination and drive to make a difference. Being named Apprentice of the Year is an incredible honour, and I am so grateful to have been recognised for the work I love to do. I hope this award inspires more young people to recognise their potential, aim higher and see that their ambitions are within reach.”
