Oliver Mordue, 19, started his Level 2 bench joinery apprenticeship with Harron Homes in September. The course lasts for two years, with one day a week spent at Leeds College of Building.

His dad Chris has been a subcontractor for Harron for 19 years and worked on several of their Yorkshire sites including Oaklands Heath in Birchencliffe and Highfield Manor in Fixby.

He said: “I’ve had a few apprentices come through Harron and it’s a great scheme. They’re learning valuable practical skills on site and the theory behind it in college with the potential to walk into a fantastic career.

“I’ve found Harron great to work with over the years and am super proud of Oliver for securing a position with them and seeing how much he’s developed in just a few months.”

“I’m really enjoying the course,” Oliver added. “I’m learning so much each week, and while it’s tough work – especially when it’s this cold! – there’s a great sense of achievement at the end of every day.

“Getting to work with my dad has been a bonus, although with his high standards there’s no chance of slacking off!”

Tony Lee, managing director at Harron Homes Yorkshire, said: “At Harron we’ve found apprenticeships to be immensely valuable in introducing the younger generation to these skilled jobs, allowing them to develop professionally while providing a fresh perspective to our established teams. It’s fantastic to see this enthusiasm for skilled trades passed down and look forward to seeing Oliver progress with Harron.”
