SHIPLEY’S new look Market Square will host its first themed market since it re-opened after a multi-million pound refurbishment on Saturday.
The Shipley Harvest Market will make the most of the new, more open space in the centre of the town, and is expected to be the first in a number of themed markets that will run alongside the town’s regular market days.
The work to the square has seen the fixed stalls of the old Shipley Market removed and replaced by an open space and large canopy.
More seating has been fitted, and new flower beds and tree planting have brought more greenery to the square.
Market traders now use either gazebos or pop up stalls.
The work was funded with £3m from the Government’s Towns Fund and a further £1m from Streets for People funding from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Last month, the square hosted a major City of Culture event, Bloom, that featured aerial acrobatics, opera and dance over two nights.
Saturday’s Harvest Market will take place both in the Market Square and in Shipley Underground Market.
It will bring together local growers, makers, and community groups for a day of eco-inspired activities, shopping, and entertainment.
Visitors can explore additional stalls offering fresh allotment produce, handmade goods, arts and crafts, and baked treats, as well as meet local organisations championing sustainable living and eco projects. Free apples, collected from Shipley’s allotments, will also be distributed to visitors.
The family-friendly market will be accompanied by a programme of performances including the Hot Aire! Band, vocal harmonies from May Contain Notes, and dance showcases from Vogue Dance Studio amongst the acts.
Councillor Rhona North, Chair of Shipley Town Council, said: “We are delighted to host the Shipley Harvest Market as the first themed market event in the newly refurbished Market Square.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to showcase not only the improvements that have been made to the town centre, but also the creativity, commitment, and community spirit that make Shipley such a special place. I hope people will come along, and enjoy the atmosphere.”
Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport said: “The Harvest Market is exactly the type of event that the regeneration of the Market Square area in Shipley was envisaged for. I hope people come into the town centre for the market as well as visiting the wonderful shops and cafes in Shipley.”
The Shipley Harvest Market is free to attend.
