Northern has received an award for its support of current and former members of the Armed Forces.
The train operator received the Gold Employer Recognition Scheme Award from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for employing hundreds of people who have previously served, or who currently serve as reservists, in the military.
In a letter, the MoD said that Northern offers a “home away from home” to military personnel transitioning into civilian careers.
Tricia Williams, managing director of Northern, said: “Speaking to staff who have served in the Armed Forces or as a reservist, I am always impressed by their work ethic, discipline, and determination to get the job done.”
Northern has been involved in recruiting events at military bases such as Catterick Garrison.
It has also been involved in the management and protection of war memorials, including the First World War memorial that was recently relocated from Newton Heath TrainCare Centre to Bury Transport Museum.
Northern signed the MoD’s Armed Forces Covenant in 2021.
Since then, it has encouraged several of its suppliers, including CAF Rail UK, to sign the covenant.
