A West Yorkshire-based gritting company is helping businesses stay open through the winter.

Birkenshaw-based Bawcro Snow & Gritting Services has grown rapidly in less than two years, expanding from a one-man operation to a trusted name in winter maintenance.

The company was founded in February 2024 by James Bawn, who saw a gap in the market for reliable gritting services after seeing businesses struggle to stay open during severe weather.

Mr Bawn said: “I saw firsthand how smaller businesses were being left behind when the weather turned.

“They needed someone local who would actually turn up, even when conditions were at their worst.

“That is where Bawcro started, with a shovel, a pickup and a lot of determination.”

In its first full winter season, the business covered more than 29,000 miles, spread 96 tonnes of rock salt, and completed over 1,500 hours of gritting and snow clearance.

It now serves clients across West Yorkshire, including food distribution centres, pubs, and restaurants.

Mr Bawn added: “All of our operations are based in Birkenshaw and we are proud to keep investment and jobs local.

“We are small enough to care, but big enough to keep the region moving when it matters most.”
