Bradford College students ‘take over’ Bradford hotel for the day

BRADFORD College Level 3 Year 2 Travel and Tourism students took over key operations at Leonardo Hotel for a week of immersive industry experience.

The ‘Hotel Takeover’, part of the College’s commitment to real-world, career-focused learning, gave students the chance to manage hotel departments firsthand. From front-of-house operations and guest check-ins to housekeeping, food and beverage service and customer service management, learners were trusted with responsibilities under the mentorship of hotel staff.

The Leonardo team created an environment that blended education with real industry expectations. Hotel Manager Emma Rhodes praised the students’ enthusiasm and professionalism: “They came in quiet during the induction, but once they got started they were open, chatty and willing to get stuck in. Their attitude and professionalism made the whole experience really positive.”

Students welcomed and assisted guests, shadowed managers, explored behind-the-scenes operations, responded to customer enquiries and gained insight into daily hotel logistics and team communication. Along the way, they developed key skills in leadership, service delivery and workplace professionalism.

This hands-on experience gives Travel and Tourism learners a valuable competitive edge as they prepare for careers in one of the world’s most dynamic and people-focused industries.

Elisa, a Level 3 Travel and Tourism student, said: “I really enjoyed the experience, especially interacting with new customers. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, the staff were so supportive that I felt confident and accepted. It’s helped me see how important real experience is in the hospitality industry.”

Malaika added: “I loved every minute of the takeover. The staff were amazing and I learned so much by handling real situations. This experience really boosted my confidence and confirmed that hands-on experience is just as important as qualifications.”

The partnership highlights a shared commitment to strengthening Bradford’s future workforce and supporting the city’s growing visitor economy. By offering workplace experience, the Leonardo team is helping shape confident, work-ready students who can progress into apprenticeships, employment or further study.

College staff praised the cohort’s professionalism and enthusiasm, while the hotel team commended their teamwork and willingness to engage in all aspects of hotel life. The takeover success has sparked discussions about future collaborations, placements and career pathways. The initiative showcased the talent of Bradford College students and demonstrated the power of strong local partnerships.
