‘I’m extremely proud’ – West Yorkshire firm reaches remarkable 140-year landmark

Wilkinson Woodward, based in Halifax, was founded by Robert Wilkinson in 1886 and has grown to become a prominent legal practice in West Yorkshire, with offices in Huddersfield and Brighouse.

Managing director Laura Kurowski said: “I’m extremely proud to be part of a firm that has such a long history of delivering exceptional legal services across the communities of Calderdale and Kirklees.Trust in our top-rated UK-based supportJoin over 500,000 ii investors taking greater control of their money and investing for a brighter financial future. “Although 140 years is a significant milestone, our sights are very much set on the future, with lots of exciting events and activities planned to come in 2026, to celebrate our anniversary.”

The firm’s history includes changes in leadership and expansion across the region.

In 1936, 50 years after it was established, Mr Wilkinson was succeeded by Gordon Woodward and Harry Ludlam, and the company became Wilkinson Woodward & Ludlam.

Mr Ludlam later served as Mayor of Halifax (1965-66) and was followed into the firm by his son David, who remained until the mid-1980s.

Wilkinson Woodward has expanded steadily since the turn of the century.

It opened a branch in Market Street, Huddersfield, in 2000 and merged with Norcliffe and Co. in 2012.

The Kirklees office has since moved to a larger site.

The business also merged with Boococks solicitors and estate agents in 2001 and with Bearders solicitors in Brighouse in 2013, opening its Brighouse office.

Originally based on King Street, that branch relocated to Commercial Street in 2025.

Today, Wilkinson Woodward employs more than 30 lawyers and 50 support staff.

The firm continues to deliver legal services tailored to its growing client base while focusing on its roots in the local community.

Wilkinson Woodward is also known for its charitable work in the region.

It has supported numerous organisations, including Overgate Hospice, Kirkwood Hospice, Next Step Trust, Huddersfield Literature Festival, and the RSPCA.

Wilkinson Woodward plans to mark its 140th anniversary with events and activities planned in 2026 to celebrate its anniversary.
