Yorkshire crowned car care capital of the UK

Over 50% of people in Yorkshire know how to fix common vehicle checks

Leading family motor retailer JCT600 has recently conducted a nationally representative study to find out what percentage of the UK doesn’t know how to fix common car issues. The results show that over 50% (50.28%) of people in Yorkshire are confident in general checks on their vehicle compared to only 24% of Londoners. Results for Yorkshire sit 10% above the national average (40%).

Some of the other results from JCT600’s survey found that:

• Only 4% of people in Yorkshire don’t know how to check their tyre tread
• Only 5% of people in Yorkshire don’t know how to check tyre pressure
• Only 7% of people in Yorkshire don’t know how to check their oil level
• 14% didn’t know how to change a windscreen wiper blade
• 17% didn’t know how to change a tyre
• 21% of people didn’t know how to check their brake fluid

Whilst stats showed Yorkshire being the most knowledgeable in car maintenance, JCT600 also found that over 31% of people in Wales don’t know how to check their brake fluid, over 25% of people in the North West don’t know how to change a tyre, over 21% of people in the North East don’t know how to change a windscreen wiper blade, and over 11% of people in the East of England don’t know how to check their tyre tread.

The survey also highlighted there are generational differences in knowledge gaps, with 86% of over 65-year-olds knowing how to change their tyre compared to only 70% of 25-34 year olds, suggesting that younger generations have fewer basic motor maintenance skills.

Richard Hargraves, Managing Director at JCT600 says, “It’s interesting to see Yorkshire as the car care capital of the UK. I think it shows the amount of skill in the region and obviously a passion for motoring. Knowing some of the expertise of our colleagues, including Daniel Dawson who was recently named the best technician in the world, it’s great to see these skills highlighted in the region.”
