Shipley College, in Saltaire, West Yorkshire is offering opportunities for industry professionals to change their careers and get into teaching.
Utilising the Taking Teaching Further scheme, the College has given a number of opportunities over the years for individuals to train to become teachers, many of which are offered permanent teaching posts at the end of their training contract.
The Taking Teaching Further scheme is a great way for those who would like to get into teaching their specialist subjects and have all their training paid for while learning from industry professionals and getting paid a salary in the process. It offers study and hands-on practical experience working with students aged 16+.
Erin Marshall, Trainee Teacher in Care, who is currently training through the Taking Teaching Further scheme, explains, “I am one year into my teacher training at Shipley College. Coming from the health and social care sector to train as a teacher was daunting but Shipley College has made the transition so easy. Both the PGCE team and my sector team have been incredible and the support I have been given has been invaluable. Best decision I ever made!”.
Trainee Teacher in Maths, Salma Younis, who is training through the apprenticeship scheme said
“With the apprenticeship scheme at Shipley College I can earn and learn at the same time which is fantastic. I have learnt so much over the course of just one year and have seen what a wonderful impact the staff here at Shipley are having on their students and the local community. There are lots of opportunities to work with local groups and take part in events in the community. It is truly making me a more rounded individual and showing me just how much more there is to teaching. It’s the best decision I made and my only regret is not starting this scheme sooner!”
