Local bookshop named best in the North at prestigious awards

A bookshop has been named the North England winner at the British Book Awards 2026.

Truman Books in Farsley was one of nine regional and country winners honoured for their energy, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

The shop was praised for its lively programme, averaging one event per week throughout 2025, including its own Lit Fest and community initiatives such as the Truman’s Book Club Social and Farsley Big Read.

It was also recognised for its school partnerships, storytimes, and strong support for diverse voices.

Tom Tivnan, deputy editor of The Bookseller, said: “In an incredibly competitive year, these nine winners are the best of best: kings and queens of local high streets, pillars of communities and – crucially in this National Year of Reading – champions of helping others discover the joy of books.”

The award, sponsored by book wholesaler Gardners, celebrates those bookshops that continue to draw book lovers to towns and cities across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
