Family to keep 4-star hotel and spa rather than sell it to new owners

THE Coniston Hotel and Spa has been taken off the market and will remain in the family, it has been announced.

Roddy Bannister will be the third generation of his family, taking over from his father, Nick, and grandfather, Michael, to run the hotel at Coniston Cold.

Following a successful internal restructuring, plans for an external sale of the business have been withdrawn, says the family.

Nick Bannister, who has led the estate for the past 11 years, will step back from the role, passing leadership of the hotel to his son Roddy, who will assume the position of Managing Director.

Nick will continue to manage the wider estate.

Nick says he is very proud of his 11 year tenure overseeing the hotel’s operations and is delighted to welcome the next generation into the hotel, just like his father, Michael, once did for him.

Nick said: “The Coniston has always been far more than a business to our family; it is a place we care about deeply and one that holds many memories for us.

“After careful consideration, we felt strongly that the right decision was to keep The Coniston within the family and everything that has already been created here.”

For Roddy, the appointment celebrates a full-circle moment. Having grown up on the estate before building a career in finance, he now returns to lead the hotel into its next phase, bringing both a deep personal connection and valuable professional experience.

He said: “This place is my home in every sense. There isn’t anywhere that offers quite what The Coniston does, and I’m incredibly proud to now lead the estate into its next chapter. I’m enormously grateful to my father, grandfather and wider family for the support and opportunity ahead”.

The renewed vision for The Coniston will focus on celebrating its identity as a working Yorkshire estate, with a continued emphasis on seasonal food, authentic hospitality and estate-led experiences that connect guests to the surrounding landscape.

The Coniston, one of the largest hotels in Yorkshire, has been owned by the family since 1969.

It began as a farm shop in the late 1980s and is now an award winning hotel and spa set in 1,000 acres of Yorkshire Dales countryside.

In 1998 the hotel had just 40 bedrooms. It was extended in 2011 with an extra 21 rooms and the Lake View Restaurant.
