‘All good things must come to an end’ – Yorkshire Water worker retires after 54 years

YORKSHIRE Water worker is retiring after more than half a century of service.

Field Technician Derek Oldham worked across West Yorkshire including Bradford, in his 54 years working for the utility company.

Derek began his career as an apprentice plumber in 1969 with the Calderdale Water Board and worked there until he was 21.

He has since worked in Halifax, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, and Bradford in various roles such as plumber, inspector, senior inspector, and field technician.

When asked about what kept him at Yorkshire Water for so long, he said: “Enjoyment!

“It is honestly been a very hard decision to leave. It has been a very big part of my life.

“Every day is a different day, every job is different and a challenge, and you have your own responsibility. I’ve had some good work colleagues – the team is everything. It’s been very good. But all good things have to come to an end!”

Mr Oldham now intends to spend more time with his family, particularly his grandkids, and work on getting his golf handicap down.

A spokesperson from Yorkshire Water added: “We wish Derek all the best in his retirement and thank him for his incredible service.”
