Apprenticeship scheme offering chance to work on railways

AN apprenticeship scheme is offering the chance for a long-term career in engineering.

The three-year programme, run by Northern, includes classroom learning, hands-on training, and leads to a Level 3 Engineering and Rolling Stock Qualification.

Applications are now open for up to 18 places, with a focus on mechanical and electrical engineering.

Raj Basi, engineering director at Northern, said: “This is not work experience.

“This is an opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and experience you need to work on the railway and keep services running for customers, day in, day out.

“We are looking to take on people who have a practical mindset and a genuine interest in engineering, so they can begin a rewarding and well-paid career in a safety-critical industry.”

Apprentices will spend one year at Myerscough College in Preston before being placed at one of Northern’s TrainCare centres in Liverpool, Manchester, or Newcastle, or at the light maintenance depot in Barrow-in-Furness.

Northern said around 90 per cent of those who complete the scheme are offered permanent positions.

Applicants must be over the age of 15 when they apply, turning 16 by September 1, 2026.

They must also have at least five GCSEs, including maths, English, and science.
