Bradford-based barristers celebrate milestone anniversary

A legal chambers in Bradford is preparing to mark its 100th anniversary.

Broadway House Chambers will celebrate a century of legal service in 2026, having been founded in 1926 by J. Stanley Snowden.

Originally called Bradford Chambers and located in Tyrrell Street, it later moved to Sunbridge Road before settling at Broadway House in Bank Street in the 1980s, where it took its current name.

Stephen Wood KC, head of chambers, said: “I was born and brought up in West Yorkshire and when I was applying for pupillage there really was no other set of chambers I wanted to join.

“Bradford has been my professional home for more than 35 years. I could not be more proud, leading a team of exceptional barristers.”

Mr Snowden was later joined by other barristers, including James Pickles, who became head of chambers before his appointment as a circuit judge.

Other former heads include Sydney Levine, Graham Hyland QC, David Jones, Michelle Colborne KC, Rodney Ferm, and Tahir Khan KC.

The set later expanded with an office in Leeds and today operates from sites in Little Germany, Bradford, and 1 City Square in Leeds.

Broadway House Chambers now has 78 members and provides legal services across crime, family, employment, civil, immigration, sport, and regulatory law.

Val Verity, the chambers’ longest-serving member of staff, said: “I have been employed at Broadway House Chambers since 1983.

“When I started working in Chambers there were around 15 barristers.

“The two pupils at that time are now both Circuit Judges.

“Over the years I have seen many other members of Chambers take Silk and be called to the Bench.

“I have enjoyed all my years working in Chambers and I have never wanted to work anywhere else.”

To celebrate its centenary, the chambers will take part in a series of monthly charitable challenges, including a 100km cycle ride, walking 100,000 steps, and donating 100 items to children’s and animal charities.

The first challenge is to complete 100 hours of pro bono work.

In February, some members of chambers will take on a challenge to cycle 100km each, raising funds in aid of Mind Bradford.

Leah Taylor, promotion and marketing manager, said: “Our centenary is not only a celebration of our history but an opportunity to give something meaningful back to our community.”
