Bradford district firm’s award-winning project ‘something to be proud of’

BRADFORD district-based painting and decorating contractor has won a national award after a seven-year project at a hospital.

The project, at The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, secured a win for Alfred Bagnall & Sons (North West) Ltd, based on Manor Lane, Shipley, in the New Build category – and was then declared Supreme Winner – at the annual Premier Trophy Awards hosted by the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA).

The contract at the hospital, which opened in October last year, is one of the largest projects ever judged at the awards.

Stephen Bagnall, group managing director at Alfred Bagnall & Sons Ltd, said: “The awards are testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment of our entire team who work tirelessly to deliver great projects, safely.

“I’m incredibly proud of everyone’s contributions that have led us to this momentous achievement.

“Together, we’ve reached new heights and set a benchmark for excellence in our field.

“Thank you to our customers, suppliers, and supporters who have been instrumental in our success.

“We look forward to continuing our journey of excellence, continuous improvement and making a positive impact in our great industry.”

The PDA is the UK’s largest trade body for the painting and decorating sector, and each year, the Premier Trophy Awards celebrate the best work across seven categories – Decorative, Highly Decorative, Small Contractor, Residential, Commercial, New Build and Industrial, with one project declared the Supreme Winner.

Neil Oglivie, chief executive of the PDA, said: “Our congratulations to Bagnalls on the high standard of work, commitment to quality and professionalism that is recognised with this award.

“Bagnalls was founded in 1875 and has been a PDA member since 1970 and we are delighted to shine a spotlight on some of the fantastic work they have achieved.”

As well as winning the New Build category and being named Supreme Winner for The Royal Liverpool University Hospital, Bagnalls was Highly Commended by the judges for projects in the Decorative, Industrial and Commercial categories.

Of Bagnall’s winning project, the award ceremony’s judges said: “A state-of-the-art hospital including £3.2 million decoration works, with specialist paint finishes and set over a seven-year contract, this was a very complicated new build due to the original building contractor going into administration and Covid delays.

“Bagnalls had been on-site at various periods throughout different stages of the contract with between 22 and 39 staff at any one time and up to seven apprentices.

“A very complex project that entailed working with up to 50 other subcontract trades at any one time. A real credit to the industry and something to be proud of.”
