A disused housing annexe in Bradford has been transformed into a new community hub.
The renovated space in Hird Road is now supporting people with complex needs as part of Lifeways’ supported living services.
It was donated and refurbished by Yorkshire Housing after becoming vacant, and officially opened as the new hub in November.
Estella Dick, area manager at Lifeways, said: “This achievement stands as a testament to the power of true partnership.
“It has only been possible through the collaborative efforts of Vanessa Kukuruzovic, me, our dedicated support staff, and the unwavering commitment of Gary Wardle.
“Gary has played a pivotal role in turning our tenant’s dreams into reality.”
The space was previously used as an annexe at a Yorkshire Housing property but was left empty when a customer moved on to a more suitable home.
Rather than let it sit unused, Yorkshire Housing worked with Lifeways – which is the UK’s largest provider of community-based support for people with complex needs – to transform it into an inclusive hub for the people Lifeways supports.
Just days after opening, the Lifeways team held its first meeting to plan a full schedule of activities for December.
Yorkshire Housing contributed new flooring, furniture, and essential items such as tables, chairs, and gardening tools as part of the refurbishment.
Gary Wardle, senior supported housing officer at Yorkshire Housing, added: “For us, it was never just about giving the annexe a fresh coat of paint, it was about creating something that genuinely supports people’s day-to-day lives.
“We wanted a space that felt welcoming, flexible and truly theirs.
“Seeing the customers already using it to plan activities, spend time together and take pride in looking after the outdoor areas shows just how much it means.
“We couldn’t be happier for them.”
The hub will serve as a gathering point for activities and social opportunities for the people Lifeways supports for years to come.
