Norman Jones travelled across the Pennines to complete his HGV training with Bingley-based Lawlers Driver Training.
Mr Jones said: “From my very first conversation with them, I knew I had made the right decision.
“Everyone was so down to earth, friendly and approachable.
“I never felt rushed or pressured.
“They gave me the information I needed, explained the different courses and they supported me in making the right decision for my circumstances.”
After years working in IT management, Mr Jones decided it was time for a complete career change.
However, he quickly became discouraged by the “hard-sell tactics” and persistent sales calls from some HGV training companies.
Instead, he turned to a family friend who works as an HGV examiner for advice.
He was recommended Lawlers Driver Training Ltd in Bingley, West Yorkshire.
Despite having training centres closer to home, Mr Jones chose to travel to Bingley.
He was particularly impressed by Lawlers’ offer of a free 30-minute taster session.
The company encouraged him to try the experience before making any commitment.
Mr Jones said: “There were moments when I felt I had taken on too much and started doubting myself.
“But the team helped me rebuild my confidence behind the wheel.
“They explained everything clearly, gave me useful advice and were incredibly patient throughout the whole process.”
Gail Lawler, director at Lawlers Driver Training, said: “Changing career is a huge decision, particularly when you are moving into an industry that is completely new to you.
“We want people to have the opportunity to find out what HGV driving is really like before they commit to training.
“That’s why we offer a free taster session and take the time to talk through the different routes into professional driving.
“There is no point putting someone under pressure to buy a course if they are not sure that it is right for them.”
Mr Jones is now encouraging others who might feel overwhelmed by the variety of training providers to consider Lawlers.
He said: “If you’re considering making the move into HGV driving and feel overwhelmed by the number of training companies out there, speak to Lawlers.
