MARKS & Spencer is proposing to close its store in The Broadway shopping centre.

The retail company announced the news to employees today.

The store has been in the shopping centre since it opened in 2015.

M&S say they are “rotating (their) store estate” and will offer workers alternative roles at other stores if the proposal goes ahead.

Vickie Smith, M&S regional manager, said: “Shopping habits are changing, so we’re rotating our store estate and as part of this transformation, we have today announced to colleagues our proposal to close the M&S Bradford store in the Broadway shopping centre.

“Our priority now is to talk to our colleagues about what this announcement means for them. Should the proposals go ahead, we will offer them alternative roles with M&S wherever possible. 

“In recent years, we have invested £20 million in our stores in West Yorkshire, including our new 97,000 sqft store at the White Rose shopping centre which opened last year and created over 230 new jobs. And we’re looking forward to making further investment this year to renew the Foodhall at our nearby M&S Pudsey store. 

“Over the last ten years, we’ve also invested more than £120 million in our Bradford distribution centre, using innovative tech to build automated systems so we can keep growing our online business.

“Over 1,800 people are employed at the Bradford site and we will invest another £13 million this year to keep growing our capacity and serve more customers.
