A community hub in Shipley has been shortlisted for a regional regeneration award.
The Shipley Sustainable Community Hub, at the Old School building on Kirkgate, is in the running in the Regeneration and Conservation category at the Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards.
The awards, organised by the School of Built Environment, Engineering, and Computing at Leeds Beckett University, celebrate achievements in the built environment and the construction industry.
Following a year-long refurbishment, the pre-1900s building now serves as a base for charitable organisations Hive and the Kirkgate Community Centre.
The £3 million refurbishment project was funded with £2.51 million from the government-funded Shipley Towns Fund, as well as funding from the Community Ownership Fund, BD25, the Mayor’s Climate Change Grant, and the Architectural Heritage Fund.
Chair of the Shipley Towns Fund, Gill Thornton, said: “The transformation of this building is incredible, and it very much deserves to win an award, so I am delighted to see it shortlisted here.”
The refurbishment was designed by Rance Booth Smith Architects of Saltaire.
Works revealed features – such as original windows and fireplaces – which had previously been hidden, and which were exposed, restored, and upgraded.
Solar panels were added, as were a heat pump, insulation, and double-glazed windows.
