A YEADON-based natural insect repellent company that has grown from a small family firm into a world-leading exporter has been recognised at the heart of government.
Jacqueline Watson, managing director of Citrefine International Ltd, joined local MP and Climate Minister Katie White OBE at Number 11 Downing Street in October to meet Chancellor Rachel Reeves.
Citrefine International, based in Yeadon, manufactures Citriodiol, a naturally derived active ingredient made from oil of lemon eucalyptus and used in insect repellents across the globe. Over the past 15 years the company has transformed its fortunes.
After years of hard work with little or no profit, the business is now thriving. The number of staff has quadrupled since 2008 and turnover has increased by even more, with Citriodiol® products now sold to major international brands.
Katie White has been supporting Citrefine in addressing a complex regulatory issue with the Health and Safety Executive. The issue, which would have significantly affected their growth, is now being resolved following constructive discussions with government officials.
Jacqueline Watson, Managing Director of Citrefine International, said: “Katie has provided real and timely support to Citrefine International Limited, which is facing a significant challenge in the way parts of the regulations governing their business currently operate.
“Katie recognised the challenge the relevant language would present to the continued growth of the business and shared this perspective with her colleagues to raise the profile of this time sensitive matter. We are all delighted that HSE have heard these concerns and are taking steps to mitigate the issue.”
Katie White OBE, MP for Leeds North West, said: “Citrefine International is a fantastic example of the innovation, commitment and community spirit that make Yeadon such a special place to do business. Jacqueline and her team have built something remarkable through years of dedication and a belief in sustainable science.
“It was a pleasure to share their story with the Chancellor, who has shown a real interest in supporting businesses that drive local growth and green innovation. Together, we are determined to help brilliant firms like Citrefine continue to grow and succeed.”
