A Bradford rug firm is celebrating its latest success at the annual Carpet Recycling UK conference and awards.

Relay Rugs was the winner in two categories: Recycler of the Year and special recognition for managing director, Andy Murphy who was awarded Recycling Champion of the Year.

Additionally, Relay was highly commended in the Circular Economy Initiative and Reuse Member of the Year categories.

Andy, who presented an overview of the brand’s journey towards a circular economy during the two-day conference, said he was “absolutely chuffed” with their awards success.

“I’m delighted the team has received this recognition for their innovation and creativity in solving what is an increasingly high-profile issue, and one that will affect consumers moving forward.

“We’re excited to progress our circular initiatives in building a solution for takeback and recycling of cotton-rich home and fashion garments.”

Driven to become the leading British brand for environmentally friendly flooring, the range includes rugs and flooring made from recycled and recyclable yarns, natural fibres and excess material that would otherwise go into waste or landfill.

A consumer takeback scheme is currently being piloted for end of use rugs and cotton-rich fashion garments. Relay combines excellent eco-credentials without charging a premium price, ensuring that the range is accessible to everyone.

The brand is a subsidiary of Melrose Interiors Ltd, based in Bradford.

Mr Murphy, who has spent his working life in the flooring industry, added: “We are a company that seamlessly blends traditional textile skills with the latest manufacturing technology, underpinned by leading-edge IT solutions.

“We are constantly looking at new markets, processes and solutions, but none of this would be possible without our people. We are extremely proud of our staff who embody our core values and determination to delight our customers.”

Melrose Interiors Ltd has been trading for over 50 years. It now services some of the largest online and high street retail chains in the UK.

Carpet Recycling UK is a not-for-profit membership association working with the supply chain to divert carpet waste from landfill, fostering strategic collaborations and networks to develop viable solutions for carpet waste.

Its 2022 conference was held in Solihull and Mr Murphy, from Relay Rugs, was one of the speakers at the event.
