Authority comments after HMRC announces Bradford office is set to close

WEST Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) has commented after HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) confirmed it was pushing ahead with plans to close its office in Bradford – with staff set to be offered jobs in Leeds.

Back in 2015, HMRC announced its Centenary Court site would shut in 2020-21 – but then a U-turn was made, with officials saying the base would close in 2027.

The news was revealed to Bradford East Labour MP Imran Hussain in a letter from HMRC chief executive John-Paul Marks, who said: “Colleagues currently based in Bradford will be offered a job in Leeds regional centre and we expect the vast majority of colleagues to continue their career with HMRC.”

A spokesperson for HMRC added: “We’re moving staff to our modern regional centre in Leeds, in line with previously announced plans, so they can work in an environment that enables them to better meet the needs of the public.

“It will also save taxpayers’ money.

“We remain committed to the region, with all 1,100 roles remaining in West Yorkshire.”

Mr Hussain and Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, leader of Bradford Council, told the T&A they had written to the Government over the matter – with the latter calling for a “serious rethink”.

The T&A asked WYCA if West Yorkshire Mayor, Tracey Brabin, would also be writing to the Government about the issue.

In response, a spokesperson for WYCA said: “While it is welcome these jobs will be retained in West Yorkshire, we understand the concerns of some Bradford-based HMRC staff about the prospect of commuting into Leeds.

“That is why it is vital that we continue to invest record amounts in Leeds-Bradford connectivity, with better bus, rail and active travel links alongside spades in the ground on a new tramline by 2028.

“With the largest commuter flows of any two UK cities, the success of our Leeds-Bradford economy is vital for the Mayor’s plan for growth, and for the country’s economic recovery.

“That is the case we are making to Government to secure the investment that Bradford deserves, including in our flagship redevelopment of the Southern Gateway, which will deliver a new through station and unlock thousands of high quality homes and jobs for local people.”
