A BRADFORD man is marking the end of an era after retiring from a joinery firm after nearly five decades of dedicated service.
Kev Whiteley, 64, has officially put down his tools after 47 years with Abrahams & Carlisle (A&C).
The well-known firm, based just on Newman Street, just off Rooley Lane, is a joiners and shopfitters which began life in 1952.
Speaking about his long-standing career, Kev told the Telegraph & Argus: “When I left school I wanted to be a joiner. I joined A&C on an apprenticeship and stayed there ever since.”
Throughout his career, Kev worked on a huge variety of projects – from pub and hotel refurbishments to traditional joinery and custom-built wardrobes and furniture.
“It’s the variety I loved,” he said.
In more recent years, Kev said the support he received from the company through a period of mental health illness was instrumental in helping him return to good health.
“Their support made such a difference to me.
“I wouldn’t be able to enjoy my retirement without that.
“They were a great set of lads to work with, I never had any strong inclinations to ever leave because of them.”
Kev’s colleagues at A&C paid tribute to his dedication and the support he has offered to those coming up through the business over the years.
Director Jon Hemingway said: “Kev has been a real asset to Abrahams & Carlisle over his 47-year employment, starting as an apprentice to become one of the company’s senior bench-hand joiners.
“He was also a great mentor to new apprentices, passing on his skills and advice to the next generation of joiners.”
One of those apprentices, Ahmed Shakir, added: “Kev is a real legend at A&C and has always been there to provide support and advice during my apprenticeship.
“47 years is an unbelievable achievement.”
Since retiring on July 31, Kev has already been enjoying time away from the bench.
“I’ve been to Cyprus with my family,” he said. “And I definitely don’t miss the 5.45am alarm!”
As for what’s next, Kev has plenty lined up.
“Getting fit, doing some fishing and gardening, travelling, spending time with family – and working through the long list of jobs my wife’s got ready for me,” he said.
Reflecting on his time at the firm, Kev said: “I just want to thank everyone at A&C.
“The directors, the workshop manager, and all the lads I’ve worked with over the years. I wish them every success in the future.”
A&C operates both locally and nationwide and recently completed the manufacturing and installation of more than 50 new stalls at Bradford’s new Darley Street Market.
