MORE than 100 jobs are at risk at Leeds Bradford Airport.
The Yeadon business has announced that it has begun consulting with 102 employees about redundancy. Those affected include workers on temporary or zero-hour contracts who are usually taken on during the peak summer months.
The airport, like those around the country, has suffered a huge drop in passenger numbers due to the Covid-19 pandemic and took a decision back in April to furlough staff on full pay.
A spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened to be consulting with colleagues as a result of the impact of the global pandemic.
“We, like many other sectors, are operating in challenging circumstances and this has led to some difficult decisions. The long-term prognosis for aviation is very different to the short-term constraints and we remain committed to ensuring we have the right offer for passengers when the time comes through our replacement terminal scheme.”
Unite regional officer Karl Stephenson said: “Unite is aware of the redundancies at Leeds Bradford Airport and will be working to protect the best interests of our members at this difficult time.”
The airport says its plans to build a £150 million new terminal, to help it modernise and increase annual passengers numbers to 7 million by 2030, remain unaffected. A consultation on those plans end on Friday, July 10.
