One of the UK’s largest South Asian shopping destinations to open in Bradford

A NEW bazaar with 140 stalls is set to open in Bradford tomorrow.

Bombay Stores, one of the city’s longest-established South Asian family businesses, is preparing to open Bombay Bazaar, a major expansion to its operations nearly 60 years after it first began trading in 1967.

The company, based on Shearbridge Road, acquired the neighbouring former Sagoo Motors building.

The owners say they have transformed the space into one of the UK’s largest South Asian shopping destinations.

Sabra Kader, part of the family behind the business, said: “My parents and my brothers have done an incredible job of keeping the Bombay Stores legacy alive for more than six decades.

“There is naturally a responsibility to carry that legacy forward, but Samir and I are excited to build on everything that has come before us while creating something new with Bombay Bazaar.”

The original Bombay Stores will remain, continuing to offer its popular selection of menswear, bridal wear, occasion wear, fabrics, crafts, party supplies and specialist services.

Bombay Bazaar will feature around 140 stalls offering fashion, jewellery, beauty products, homeware, gifts, food, lifestyle goods and more.

The business’s story began with the late Abdul Kader, who arrived in Bradford nearly 70 years ago with just £50.

He and his wife Maryam initially ran a fish and chip shop, introducing customers to spices and masalas.

Maryam also began sewing garments and selling fabrics from the back of the shop, laying the foundations for what would become Bombay Stores.

The business has since become a fixture in Bradford’s South Asian community, dressing generations for weddings, Eid, Diwali and other important occasions.

It has been run for many years by Abdul and Maryam’s sons, Saleem and Vaseem Kader, with support from their sister Saira Poonawala and Sabra Kader.

The latest expansion is being led by Sabra Kader and her son Samir.

Ms Kader said: “Bombay Stores will continue to be the destination people know and love, while Bombay Bazaar will bring together an incredible variety of businesses to create a real shopper’s paradise.

“We can’t wait to open the doors and welcome everyone.”
