RETAIL, LEISURE & HOSPITALITY AWARDS: Customer Service Award

THIS award gave both individuals and companies the opportunity to be recognised for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Two companies and one staff member were shortlisted.

Phillip Kendall of the Midland Hotel was one of those on the list.

The Kirkgate Shopping Centre was also shortlisted.

Of the 25 members of staff working for the centre, 20 of them are customer service based – helping to keep the building clean and safe.

But, the winner was HMV Bradford.

Manager Danielle Lamb went up to the stage to collect the award.

She paid tribute to all those who have kept the company alive in Bradford over the recent tough years.

She said: “I’m so stoked. I know they always say it, but it’s a true honour just to be nominated.

“I’ve got the best staff, the best customers, we’ve seen year-in, year-out.

“We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them; it’s because of them we’ve won this.”

The company has survived two administration processes in recent years and Mrs Lamb feels like the award is validation that HMV Bradford is still important to the city.

She said: “It’s little over a year now we went into administration for the second time.

“We got saved again and to be recognised for doing something right is just amazing.”

With the store experiencing a bumpy road in its recent history, it might be easy for staff to be pessimistic about HMV’s future.

But Mrs Lamb reiterates that the Bradford store will do its utmost to remain open and has already made movements to keep relevant in an industry where digital has become king.

She said: “We’re going to try our best. I absolutely think so.

“I think one thing we’ve learnt is that people do love coming in and having a browse and having a chat and figuring out new music, new movies, new artists.

“We’re behind local artists as well. You can bring in your band’s CDs.”

This relatively new initiative means a more hyper-local approach for HMV Bradford, according to Mrs Lamb.

New bands can come and see staff to find out more about the opportunity.

She said: “That’s what we’re working on at the moment, so that is available in store.”
