Toolstation plan for mill unit

A LARGE retail unit in a Bradford mill could soon become a new branch of Toolstation.

Bradford Council recently received a planning application for new signage on Whetley Mill, off Thornton Road.

The plans show that the large unit will be taken on by Toolstation, although the company declined to confirm any plans for the building to the Telegraph & Argus.

The unit, next to My Lahore unit, was the former home of Home Stock, a discount furniture store, but is currently vacant.

The hardware retailer currently has a store in Bowling Back Lane.

Bradford Council’s heritage officer Jon Ackroyd describes Whetley Mill as “one of the best surviving textile mill complexes in the District.”

He adds: “It is architecturally distinguished being the work of Milnes and France, one of the eminent practices in the town in the 19th century. It also illustrates well the different components of an integrated textile mill, built to undertake the various processes, and the evolution of a large mill complex.”

He has said the signage at the front of the store should be reduced in size, but is otherwise acceptable.

A decision on the signage application is expected next month.
