Seeking to train the professionals of the future, Mitton Group operates an active and successful apprenticeship scheme, with apprentices at all stages of their training working across the different areas of the business.
James Grace, a third-year Apprentice Design Engineer, talks about his experiences learning his craft with the group.
“I’m currently in my third year as an apprentice with Mitton Group. I joined the business following my A levels, originally working on site, but I suppose you could say that the management recognised my potential, and I was soon working in the offices as an Apprentice Design Engineer. “
“I work with senior design engineers, learning my trade from them, working on real commercial projects and enjoying the benefits of their experience. I really appreciate the fact that the work is very varied from day to day, with active involvement in the design of domestic services, heating and ventilation schemes and more complex mechanical services commissions.”
“My work also involves liaising with contractors and subcontractors, discussions with clients and then doing the detailed design work to make it all real! It’s an interesting apprenticeship because I’m always working on live projects, not classroom-based scenarios. These different challenges are always testing my knowledge and expanding my experience.”
“I also attend college one day a week as an integral part of my apprenticeship, and I’m currently studying subjects include Building Information Modelling (BIM), Ventilation and Air Conditioning, Mathematics, Science and Materials.”
“I still have eighteen months before completing my apprenticeship, which will see me achieve qualifications at NVQ Levels 4 and 5. Following that, I aim to stay with Mitton and continue my studies to complete NVQ Level 6, which will give me a qualification equivalent to a university degree.”
It’s not all work and no play – when James is not designing schemes for Mitton Group, he is a keen sports fan, enjoying playing football and socialising with friends in his spare time.
