Housing provider urges older people stay safe and warm this winter

Older people are being urged to take extra care during the winter.

With temperatures dropping in Yorkshire and the Humber, Anchor, England’s largest not-for-profit provider of housing, is reminding people to remain warm and safe throughout winter.

National service improvement manager Asa Johnson said: “Anchor is urging the wider community to look out for older neighbours and relatives, particularly those living alone, who are more vulnerable in the cold weather.

“We recommend that older people stay hydrated and eat at least one hot meal a day if possible.

“Warming foods like soup and stews, and hot drinks like tea can help keep energy levels up during the winter.”

Mr Johnson advised people to dress in several light layers, check weather forecasts before going out, and wear footwear with good grip to prevent slips and falls.

He also recommended keeping curtains closed at night to retain heat, keeping a good stock of any medications, and having emergency contact numbers somewhere visible and nearby.

Mr Johnson added: “Equally important is staying connected. Check in regularly with family or neighbours, and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.”
